Network Administrator, Information Technology Department

Position Description:

The Network Administrator provides operational, configuration, and troubleshooting support to ensure high quality service in all network related areas. The Network Administrator works with the Network Operations team to oversee functionality of the campus LAN/WAN and back end telephony services. This position is responsible for all functional network management, corresponding research and development, security, and software license management. This position reports to the CIO but receives day-to-day work direction/instruction and follow-up from the Senior Network Administrator.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure the institution adheres to software licensing requirements, conducts software audits, and evaluates new software for the campus needs; makes recommendations to the Senior Network Administrator for acquisition.
  • Functionally manage and be responsible for all user accounts, policies, and network usage.
  • Assist in the implementation of the support and maintenance program to establish a stable and secure network and computer working environment on the campus LAN/WAN and telephony network.
  • Works closely with the Network Operations Team to ensure effective support and quick problem notification and resolution; develops and maintains effective monitoring process to guarantee maximum uptime of campus bandwidth and email.
  • Provide regular and updated documentation on network status including server conditions, backup status, and wireless status.
  • Works with Senior Network Administrator to document and schedule changes to the network including network and server upgrades, such as changes, downtime, security audits, resource and other interdependent issues, etc.
  • Manage and maintains all network related services, including but not limited to: print services, internet services, licensing, email, network security, QoS, wireless networking, IP telephony, VPN, firewall management, intranet connectivity for the campus and tape backups of university information.
  • Act as a member of the Network Operations Team and provide valuable input towards the development of Network standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assume and provides leadership over key networking decisions regarding functionality, upgrades, and support for all network devices and services as directed by the senior network administrator or CIO.
  • Prepare weekly status reports on the status of the network equipment including but not limited to hardware conditions, server environment, data backup and integrity, security and firewall status, status of network, support issues, problem areas, projects status and progress of weekly assignments.
  • Assist in technology training related activities.
  • Required to work on call shift rotations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. or equivalent is required.
  • A+/Network + Certification, MCP required. MCSE/MCSA preferred.
  • Knowledge and proven competence of all Network testing equipment.
  • At least four years of prior work experience or technical training for LAN/WAN management preferred.
  • Possess good working knowledge of basic and advanced networking hardware; able to diagnose specific problems related to such hardware, and provide viable solutions.
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of all Windows operating systems, Exchange, the Windows server environment, Active Directory, Cisco equipment.
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of Domains, Segmentation, Account Management, Network backups, Trusts, Policies, Network Protocols and Bindings, and Software Imaging, QoS, and Firewalls.
  • Good managerial experience, good organizational skills, the ability to train and encourage a staff of Network Administrators.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, analyzes and logically solves problems, and understands technical materials.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperate with staff, faculty, students and vendors.
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours when necessary and be on call for support of campus technology services.
  • Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University.
