Director of Annual Giving


The IU Foundation seeks a strategic thinker with strong business acumen to provide visionary leadership and quantitative analysis to Annual Giving for the Indiana University Foundation, one of the largest and most successful annual giving programs in the Big 10.

This senior position leads a dynamic team of six professionals that supports campuses and units throughout the University by growing a strong base of philanthropic support for IU and the IU Alumni Association’s membership program. The Director of Annual Giving will develop a comprehensive business plan to enhance, strengthen and sustain core areas of success by a mix of marketing activities including: digital, direct mail, Telefund and peer-to-peer fundraising. The Director of Annual Giving will also be responsible for analyzing data and identifying key performance indicators to ensure the IU Foundation meets the changing needs of donors.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Marketing, the Director of Annual Giving will collaborate closely with the Executive Director of the IU Alumni Association, President and CEO of the IU Foundation and Senior Development Staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities to continually improve the Annual Giving business model, while sustaining core areas of success
  • Oversee and support the central Annual Giving and membership team in their execution of core operations supporting mail, email and Telefund campaigns
  • Optimize the ‘media mix’ across mail, email, Telefund and peer-to-peer fundraising
  • Identify, track and respond to key business drivers across and within marketing channels
  • Develop and implement audience targeting strategies
  • Work with the IUF Marketing team to develop messaging and donor stewardship strategies
  • Identify, design and execute in-market experiments to test new approaches to messaging, targeting and media optimization
  • Work collaboratively with unit/campus development officers to coordinate annual fund efforts throughout the IU system
  • Provide business analysis, strategy and consulting support to the units and campuses of IU

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of Telefund program and staff
  • Mentor Annual Giving staff members to reach their professional goals and assuring that professional opportunities for growth are made available to them
  • Setting short- and long-term priorities and action plans for Annual Giving in conjunction with the objectives of the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Senior Development Staff
  • Ensure business goals are met by tracking progress and responding to needs and challenges
  • Review and modify programs to meet the changing needs of donors
  • Communicate priorities to staff and key stakeholders
  • Stay abreast of development in technology and people management and applying these to the Annual Giving department to increase productivity or reduce operating costs
  • Represent IU and the IU Foundation at industry conferences, campus training and at division meetings


  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Five (5) years management experience, preferably in a fundraising organization
  • Experience developing business strategy in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders
