Senior Major Gifts Officer – Los Angeles

Job Description

The Senior Major Gifts Officer, based in Los Angeles, CA, will be a crucial contributor in the effort to build the department into a sustained multi-million dollar program.  The Senior Major Gifts Officer’s portfolio will include 13 states in the Western United States, with a particular focus on the ASPCA’s donor base in Los Angeles.  This position will be directly responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts prospects across the region, and will play a leading role in cross-departmental efforts, in order to develop these prospects through web communications, direct mail, special events, etc.  The Senior Officer is an integral member of the thought leadership team that is responsible for developing a strategic vision and implementation plan for the continued development and growth of major giving for the ASPCA.

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and implement strategic plan for the cultivation and solicitation of assigned portfolio of Major Donor prospects with potential to make $10,000+ annual gifts and/or multi-year pledges
  • Achieve annual revenue goal and assist with meeting departmental and campaign goals
  • Increase quality of major gifts relationships through networking and cultivation
  • Manage correspondence and proposals to major gifts prospects in portfolio by prioritizing donor interactions appropriately and ensuring that all related major gifts requests are closed on schedule 
  • Conduct visits and other high-level interactions with prospects, documenting actions when appropriate
  • Arrange visits, as needed, to select high-level donor prospects on behalf of the ASPCA’s senior leadership team, including the CEO and/or a member of the Board of Directors,
  • Build relationships with Programs and Communications departments, to acquire information needed to solicit gifts and build donor relationships effectively
  • Collaborate with Development staff to strengthen major gifts strategies, enhance creative approaches to upgrading select donors, and identify other creative opportunities to enhance the ASPCA’s relationship with its major donors
  • Work with President’s Office and Special Events staff to implement series of high-level national major donor prospect cultivation events
  • Partner with donor volunteers, when appropriate, on local hosted events and special initiatives
  • Serve on strategic planning teams for special campaigns and other major organizational initiatives
  • Assist with team goal setting and expense management


  • Bachelors degree required, advanced degree a significant plus


  • Minimum 7-10 years of non-profit development experience preferred, at least 5 years of both major gifts and personnel management preferred
  • Capital campaign gift cultivation and solicitation experience in Los Angeles required

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Familiarity with all aspects of fundraising principles and practices; knowledge of annual giving/direct mail and planned giving particularly important
  • Knowledge of personnel management and best practices management procedures

Skills Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate individuals, successfully solicit gifts of $100,000+, as well as steward major gifts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively and professionally with executive staff/board members
  • Ability to build productive relationships with major gifts prospects
  • Commitment to goal attainment, high degree of initiative, and ability to motivate and engage high level volunteers and donors
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high degree of autonomy and accountability and to be a team player
  • Ability to develop and follow through on creative solicitation strategies in order to generate enthusiasm  amongst team members
  • Must formulate effective strategies for major gifts advancement
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.

  • Strong interest in the ASPCA’s mission and familiarity with Los Angeles philanthropic circles preferred.
  • This position will work from a remote home office and must be based in Los Angeles
