Computer Operations Specialist


  • Monitor and control computer and peripheral data processing equipment.  Enter commands at computer terminals, monitor and respond to operating system error message.  Monitor data backup, data interface and other data center batch jobs.  Operates and maintains various computer equipment and data entry equipment as specified in the Data Procession procedure manuals.  Operations staff is responsible for running and monitoring daily processing software jobs, utilizing the operations guidelines and reporting structure designed by programming staff and software vendor specifications.   Computer Operator provides first level of problem determination in software and hardware errors.  Computer Operation Specialists must maintain a professional, cooperative, congenial working relationship with co-workers, internal and external customers.


  • Minimum 2 years data center experience, preferably in Healthcare setting
  • Microsoft Office and Windows knowledge
  • Ameritech applications knowledge preferred.


  • High School degree required


  • A+ Certified desirable
  • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (These are the essential job functions for this position. The essential functions of this job include, but may not be limited to those listed in this job description. Employees hired for this position must be able to perform the essential function of this job without imposing significant risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of themselves or others):

  • Monitors HELP desk work queue(s), and pro-actively works problem orders to ensure end-user service level agreements are kept.
  • Monitor Nagios, Meditech and Summit alert notification systems and take the necessary actions to resolve issues.
  • Monitor systems for equipment failures or errors in performance.
  • Respond to program messages.
  • Notify supervisor or computer technicians of equipment failures.
  • Answer telephone calls to assist computer users with problems, both application and hardware (personal computers, printers, data center computers, etc.).
  • Record information such as computer operating time, problems that occurred, and actions taken.
  • Help programmers and network engineers test and debug new systems and programs.
  • Oversee the operations of data center hardware.
  • Capable of performing duties on all shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Assist in training new Computer staff as needed.
  • Work within the scope of Change Control, and keep established SLA guidelines.
  • Optional responsibilities: At times our Desktop team will have extra work or project needs that will require additional help.  Computer Operations Specialist may be asked if they would be willing to work with the Desktop team to provide assistance, in which will not be held to the same expectation as those who are in the Desktop Tech role. These optional responsibilities includes:
    • Move equipment to connect or disconnect the equipment or related peripherals.
    • Assist with Desktop duties utilizing current skills posse and/or may be offered the opportunity to be trained and learn new skills in order to better assist the Desktop team.
    • Assist with Help Desk tickets that are within skills sets.
    • Assist with the creation of training and/or process documentation.
    • May assist Desktop Team with other projects for development opportunity.
